Chip Conde, Stark County Property Tax Supervisor and long-time Enshrinement Festival volunteer, is a graduate of Canton Lincoln High School and the former Mount Union College (now University), has chaired many Enshrinement Festival committees including Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable, Concert & Fireworks, and Drum Corps International, and he continues to serve as a member of each of those committees, as well as the Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner Committee.
In 2013, he served as co-chair of the 50th Anniversary Community Celebration Day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He and wife Kathy are strong supporters of the Canton Palace Theatre, including his tenure as a former Board member and current Capital Campaign Chairman. He is a Board member and treasurer of the Friends of the Children’s Network, member of the Canton Lincoln High Alumni Association, and member of the Spanish-American Center.
At our weekly meeting on July 22, 2016, Canton Rotarian and Past President Dan Matthews (sponsor) introduced our newest member, Rob Roland, to the Rotary Club of Canton.
Rob Roland is the Managing Partner of Day Ketterer and maintains an active practice of select clients.
Rob firmly believes that his clients are best served by concentrating on their businesses -- and not on fighting legal battles. Therefore, he applies sound business concepts to the practice of law and prides himself on keeping his clients out of the courtroom. However, when litigation is the only alternative, Rob works closely with a team of aggressive commercial litigators at Day Ketterer to achieve his clients’ goals.
For 30 years, Rob has provided legal advice to Ohio and national businesses. His practice is primarily focused on business and banking law, employee stock benefit plans, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, business dispute resolution, and commercial real estate transactions. Rob serves as general counsel for many well-known closely held corporations and non-profit associations. He represents banks and financial institutions throughout Ohio. In addition, he has taught college real estate courses and has been a frequent lecturer on business law concepts.
Rob began his legal career with Day Ketterer in 1984. He was elected to the Firm's Executive Committee in 1992. He was named Managing Partner in 2012. Under Rob's leadership, the Firm has expanded across Ohio with offices in Canton, Hudson, Youngstown, and Toledo.
During his career, Rob has volunteered a great deal of his time serving the business interests of his clients in the community at large. In 2007, he was elected as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, Rob was one of three individuals appointed by the President of the Senate to serve on the Ohio State Commission on Local Government Reform and Collaboration. As a Commissioner, Rob is charged by the State Legislature with the duty to develop recommendations on reforming and restructuring local government in Ohio in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of local government operations and to achieve cost savings for taxpayers.
When not practicing law, Rob is a dedicated audiophile, long-time member of the Canton Wine Guild, accomplished jazz pianist, maintains a significant library, and is a mediocre cook (but he is reporting slow but steady progress).

Last Friday we held our Club Assembly, which I began with a “State of our Club” talk. The State of our Club is – a state of flux! Miriam-Webster dictionary defines “flux” as a “series of changes; continual change”. For our club to be able to attract new vibrant members, to be a positive force in our community, to be part of Rotary International’s world betterment projects, we must be able to change and embrace new ideas and have an open mind to change.
We reviewed our club’s financial status, and in our club operating accounts we have been running significant yearly deficits of $20,000 or so for 6 or more years. We cannot continue deficit spending of this size and still be a viable club in 10 years. Some immediate changes we are making to reduce our deficit are:
new office share arrangement with District 6650 which will give us savings of about $3,000 per year;
no longer mailing Rotograms – savings of about $1,200 per year (if you need a printed copy mailed to you please contact the office and there is a $50 yearly charge);
new club fundraiser of a Reverse Raffle in Feb/March;
We have begun requiring budgets from all committees and any organization wanting Canton Rotary to donate must apply for funding consideration.
There will be more little bites out of our deficit over the coming year.
Another major change we are making is discontinuing Pancake Day this year. One of the best things about Pancake Day was the camaraderie that Rotarians working together created. Two of the worst things were the $100 for tickets which were mostly given away, and the relatively low number of Rotarians who actually participated in Pancake Day. We are replacing it with a club fundraiser, a reverse raffle, in the Feb/March time frame. We are hoping this event will provide as much, or more, time for Rotarians to work and socialize together and will also generate funding to support our club.
Canton Rotary will be funding and helping construct a new “pocket park” in the Harrisburg/Royal neighborhood. This project will happen in the spring, and will be part of the neighborhood revitalization being led by Habitat for Humanity of East Central Ohio. This project will have Canton Rotary’s name attached and will help raise our status in the Canton community. This project, coupled with our donation for the Market Square development, which will also give Canton Rotary naming rights within the project, will help raise the awareness and importance of Canton Rotary in our community.
There are 3 main accounts that Canton Rotary operates –
the Club fund, which is for our club operation including salaries, rent, office expenses, and so forth. The Club fund gets its money from dues, office sharing, and club fundraisers.
Our Charitable fund, through which we fund local projects including Junior Achievement, Philomatheon Society, Shelter Box donation, Exchange Students, RYLA and Interact, new member project, and many more. The Charitable fund receives its money from Oktoberfest, President Elect’s campaign, Happy Bucks, and things like an auction from the podium.
Our last fund is the Endowment Fund, which has been built up over many years from donations to the endowment by Canton Rotarians. The Endowment fund has its own controlling committee, headed by Curt Werren, and this is where we fund major things like the Market Square donation, as well as major donations to local organizations such as the Stark County Library, the Children’s Dyslexia Center, Canton Palace Theatre, and more.
I need to make a correction from last week. The golf outing has always been a club fundraiser, and we have not been donating more money than we received. Thanks Nick Perini for the correction!
On Friday, August 19, 2016, the Rotary Club of Canton will host its annual golf outing at The Sanctuary Golf Club located at 2017 Applegrove Street N.W., North Canton. Each year the outing brings more than 75 golfers together from many local Rotary Clubs to participate in a friendly competition, leaving only one Rotary Club with bragging rights for the next year. This is a great day to bring guests or prospective members to see what Rotary is all about and meet some of the great people that are involved with Rotary.
As in the past, the golf outing will take the place of our regularly-scheduled Friday meeting. This means all Canton Rotarians are welcome to come for lunch, even if they are not planning to golf. The cost for your lunch would be $13.00. We will be enjoying Old Carolina Barbecue at noon.
After lunch, those golfing will join their foursomes and participate in a scramble-format golf tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in the scramble and for the longest drive, closest to the hole, and longest putt.
There will also be a putting contest, with the winner taking a BMW home for the weekend, courtesy of Cain BMW.
Please follow this LINKfor a printable copy of the golf outing sign-up flyer.
Hole sponsorships are available for this year's golf outing on August 19, 2016, at a cost of $75.00. You can promote your organization with a sign near the tee box at the course.

At our weekly meeting on July 22, 2016, President Craig Young welcomed our members and guest to the meeting.
Rotarian Tony Pierce gave the Invocation.
Club Secretary Suzette Matthews welcomed the following guest to the meeting: Michael Doyle.
Suzette then provided this week's Rotafact: Why Rotary?
Every day that you serve Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives.
Every thing you do does indeed matter. Every good work you do, matters.
Everything you do makes a better world for all of us. In this new Rotary year, we all have a great opportunity and new chance to change the world for the better through Rotary Serving Humanity.
The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following Rotarians:
Lynn Hamilton - in honor of John Germ, Rotary International President. Lynn feels it is appropriate for an organization fighting a disease like polio to be lead by a person named 'Germ'!
Jerry Ortman - in honor of his Family coming into town this weekend.
Bruce Schorsten - in honor of the hosting of the annual Schorsten Junior Golf Tournament this past weekend. Schorsten's have been sponsoring it for 47 years and hope to get to 50 years.
Amanda Tietze - is happy that she is starting her vacation today!
Golf Chairman Nick Perini took to the podium to remind members of the upcoming Golf Outing slated for August 19, 2016 at the Sanctuary Golf Course. Nick reminded everyone to get their foursome into the office and if you do not have a foursome, no worries, you will be paired with others that are in the same situation! Also, if you would like to be a hole sponsor for the event, he asked that you get word into the Rotary office. (*the cost for the golf outing is $50 per person and a hole sponsor is $75). Lunch is still $13.00 for those who will not be golfing but would like to attend.
PP Dan Matthews then presented his new member, Rob Roland, to the Club. (*Please see story above to view Rob's biography).
President Craig then presented the "State of the Club" to the membership. President Craig was then joined at the podium with a presentation from the Committee Chairs regarding their respective committee. *Please see story above.
