PASSING OF LONGTIME CANTON ROTARIAN AND PAST PRESIDENT, KEN WEBER

A native of Wisconsin, Ken Weber began his career with Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin before joining the former Goodwill Industries of East Central Ohio, Inc. as President and Chief Executive Officer in March of 2002. Under Weber's direction, the local non-profit acquired Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and Weber oversaw the new organization, Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, Inc. Since his arrival, the organization has seen a growth in several areas, including individuals served, services offered, retail sales that fund Programs and Services, and more.

Ken spent his time volunteering for several service organizations. Ken served as a Board Member of the Canton Rotary Club and was Past President in 2009-2010.  He was also a Paul Harris Fellow +1 and was a member for the past 14 years. Ken also served as a Board member for the Canton Museum of Art. He was a member of United Way's COMPASS Committee and an Advisory Board Member for Walsh University and Past President of the Ohio Association of Goodwill Industries.  Ken was the founding Chairman of Leave a Legacy Stark County.

Ken leaves his wife, Sally, and their five grown children.

NEW MEMBER, BECKY CALLAHAN, INTRODUCED TO THE CLUB
At our December 9, 2016 meeting, PP Dan Matthews (sponsor) introduced our newest member, Becky Callahan, to the Rotary Club of Canton.

Becky Callahan has lived in the Lake Township/Uniontown/Hartville area for 29 years. She and her husband, Dan, are both retiring this December. Becky will have worked at ComDoc for 29 years. They have 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren.

Becky is a Leadership Stark Signature graduate. She is currently serving her 2nd term as board member at Beech Creek Gardens in Alliance. Her husband is also on the board and serves as treasurer. Becky has served as chairperson as well as served on chairs for several events for both Beech Creek and the Stark County Chapter of Community Betterment. She was awarded the prestigious Elly Griffith award at ComDoc, which also included a trip to Mexico.

Becky loves anything to do with the outdoors: fishing, camping, biking, hiking and backpacking. She ran her first half marathon at age 50 and has now run a total of nine of them. Her running “career” was unfortunately sidelined with a recent fracture.

Becky is honored to have her application for the Canton Rotary accepted, and looks forward to learning about Rotary and becoming more involved in her community.

The Rotary office received an email from Barbara Loudon, District 6650 RYLA Conference Coordinator, asking for our Club's assistance with donating items to be used in "Goody Bags", which are provided to students who attend the conference.  At the RYLA conference, which stands for 'ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS', High School students from all over District 6650 come together for a weekend of leadership development activities.

At RYLA, these students really enjoy receiving goody bags with giveaways provided by District 6650 Rotary Clubs.  Below is a list of ideas:

  • Please NO political giveaways.  We will not use them.
  •
  • Please NO CAFFEINE snacks or drinks.  We cannot distribute them for safety reasons.

On Thursday, December 8, 2016, the Board of Trustees had an "Open House" at the new Canton Rotary office so that Canton and District 6650 Rotarians could view this new office space.  This event was attended by 30 individuals who were very impressed with not only the office space, but also how quickly things were put into place. Thank you to office staff, Lauri Coy and Barb Schrade, for all the hard work they performed, not only getting things in order from the move, but for also decorating the office and having it ready for this event!

A "Thank You" also goes out to President Craig for providing the beverages and to Greg Triner for donating two bottles of wine.  Also, Vice President Michelle Mullaly took time out of her day to prepare the meat and cheese trays and fruit trays.

CHARITABLE FUND DRIVE
Canton Rotary Charitable Fund - Four Way Test

The Four Way Test is a speech competition for area high school students where each speaker is asked to apply the Rotary Four Way Test to everyday relationships with other people. The contest is held each year in February and is judged by three carefully chosen Canton Rotarians.

Cash prizes are awarded to the first, second and third place finishers. The winner of the Canton Rotary contest qualifies to attend the District 6650 competition. The district winner will then enter state finals with victors from Ohio's four other Rotary districts.

The Four-Way Test was originally introduced in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor. The program became so popular among Rotary clubs that in the 1940's it was adopted by Rotary International and became a vital part of the Vocational Avenue of Service programs.

The Rotary Four Way Test
of the things we think, say and do
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

I don't know about you, but I love attending this meeting. These young adults do an excellent job not only coming up with creative and sometimes funny ways of applying the four way test, but their delivery of the speech is outstanding! This is a wonderful program that introduces Rotary to young adults who will hopefully be future Rotarians.

As 2016 comes to an end and we welcome the new year, I'm looking forward to my term as President. The funds we raise now through the Charitable Fund lays the foundation of just how much our club can accomplish during the 2017 - 2018 Rotary year. There is so much I would love for our club to accomplish and many great causes to support; but truth be told, we are limited by the amount we raise. We are well on our way, but we still have a long way to go to reach our $20,000 goal. To date, we have raise $7,016 or 35% of our goal. I am truly thankful to those of you that have donated so far. My challenge to you is to close the gap and reach 50% of our goal by the end of the year. The last day the Rotary office will be open is December 20th. If you want to claim your donation on your 2016 income taxes you can bring your donation to this Friday's Rotary meeting. This holiday, give the give that gives the whole year through by donating to the the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund.
