At the Rotary Club of Canton's May 12, 2017, meeting Vice President Michelle Mullaly announced the newest 2016 - 17 "Rotarian of the Year": Past President J. Daniel Matthews.

The idea of recognizing an outstanding Canton Rotarian started in the 2011-2012 Rotary year. Rotarians who have received this prestigious Rotarian of the Year Award are: Past President Paul White; Dale Holwick; Past President Mike Gregorek; Past District Governor & Past President Bob Pattison; and last year’s recipient, Past District Governor & Past President, Dave Ewing.

What does this award represent?  It represents the living example of what it truly means to be a Rotarian--looking for ways to get involved with his/her time, talent or treasure; sharing Rotary with others; demonstrating a strong commitment to Rotary through the service they render to the club, the community and the Rotary Foundation; and in truly applying the Rotary motto of 'SERVICE ABOVE SELF'.

This year’s winner, Dan Matthews, is a loyal and dedicated Rotarian who has dedicated 40 years of life service to the Canton Rotary Club, accepts and excels at responsible positions in the club and does so happily, practices the 4-Way test, attends meetings regularly, and lives a life that exemplifies SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Over the past two months, nominations were cast and the roster of nominees were voted on by the Canton Rotary Club to determine this year’s Rotarian of the Year:

Dan joined the Rotary Club of Canton in 1976 and was sponsored by his dentist, Bob Bandi.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL MAJOR DONOR GIFT RECOGNITION PRESENTED TO PP J. DANIEL MATTHEWS
During the May 12, 2017, Rotary meeting PDG/PP Dave Ewing presented a Rotary Foundation Major Donor Level 1 recognition award to Past President J. Daniel Matthews.  PDG/PP Dave had the following to say about Dan Matthews:

"I am pleased to take this opportunity to honor Dan Matthews, who has generously contributed to the Rotary Foundation over the years, and in so doing, has achieved Major Donor status. Because of his dedication to our Foundation, we honor Dan with a Major Donor Level 1 recognition.

Thank you, Dan, for your support: so much good begins with your generosity. You give to others not knowing their stories, their faces, or even their names. In so doing, you demonstrate, through your generous acts, that all fellow human beings are worthy of our compassion. Your act of kindness is a seed of peace that will yield returns for not only the communities served by your generosity, but for Rotary as a premier foundation and organization. You are among a dedicated and select group of humanitarians who have committed themselves to serving others. Major Donors change the lives of children, young people, adults, communities, and the world to which we all belong.

Dan, your gift inspires others to give, not just of their "treasure" but of their time and of their talent! In recognition of your investment in The Rotary Foundation's wonderful projects and programs, I present this crystal and Major Donor pin on behalf of The Foundation's Trustee. The crystal is engraved with your name and depicts doves bearing olive branches - universal symbols of peace."
