Alexandra Nicholis Coon is the Executive Director for the Massillon Museum. She received her MA in Art History from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, a BA in Art History from Kent State University, and has a Collections Care certificate from the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation. She has been with MassMu since 2001, serving as Curator for the Museum from 2003-2010, and executive director since 2011. Nicholis Coon was adjunct faculty for Walsh University from 2006 – 2011, having taught art history and museum studies courses, and is a member of the University’s advisory board. She serves on the board of Visit Canton!, the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau for Stark County, City of Massillon’s Community Improvement and Third Century Committees, is Vice President for the Board of the Ohio Museums Association, serves as a trustee for the Massillon Chamber Foundation, and is an advisory member for Jackson School for the Arts and the City of Akron Holocaust Commemoration committees.
In 2011, she was recognized with the YStark! “Twenty Under 40” award, was a 2012 inductee to the Canton YWCA Women’s Hall of Fame, the 2012 recipient of the Massillon Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence in Leadership Award, and a 2013 and 2014 Athena Award finalist for Stark County. Coon is a 10-year member of the Canton/Stark County Soroptimist club, and has served on the organization’s Midwestern Region board. She is a member of the Akron Chapter D.A.R., and resides in North Canton, OH with her husband, Joshua, and twin daughters Persephone and Myra.
On Saturday, September 17, 2016, the Rotary Club of Canton held its "2nd Annual Oktoberfest" event on the Market Avenue green space. The weather was perfect, the atmosphere was festive and the music was lively! Everyone had a great time who attended.

As Rotarians we take pride in making a difference everywhere we can, as well as being the catalyst for compassionate change. At the start of every meeting, we reaffirm our commitment to this when we state that “the Rotary Club of Canton is the finest Rotary Club in the World". The catastrophic flood devastating the State of Louisiana is now the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Hurricane Sandy. There have been 40,000 homes damaged as a result of the flooding. To repair these homes much work will need to be done, such as removing existing drywall and plywood before mold sets in.
I would like to challenge each and every Rotarian of the Rotary Club of Canton to match my donation of $50.00. Can you imagine just exactly how many residents of Louisiana we could help if each and every one of us made a donation? Picture if you will, what it would be like tomorrow if everything you had was washed away. How would you want the Rotarians of Louisiana to help you?
The Rotary Club of Salem is spearheading this humanitarian project and all checks are to be made payable to the Salem Rotary Foundation. We ask that your contributions be sent to: the Rotary Club of Canton, 203 Cleveland Avenue N.W., Canton, OH 44702. The deadline date to make a contribution will be Friday, September 23, 2016. At that time the Canton Rotary office will forward all contributions to the Salem Rotary Club. Tax receipts will be issued for personal donations. Together we can make a difference.
As part of our ‘Junior Achievement-In-A-Day’ project, on Tuesday, August 30, 2017, Rotarians Ron Becker, Jim Molnar, Tom Schervish, Bruce Schorsten, and Rick Taylor presented the ‘JA Hire Me’ program to 361 students at McKinley High School – Downtown Campus, while Teena Wilson was presenting the same program to 128 students as part of the team at McKinley - Main Campus. The JA ‘Hire Me’ program teaches the students about job readiness and employer expectations. In round 2 of our JA-In-A-Day project last Friday, September 16, 2017, Canton Rotarians Amanda Tietze, Bob Matthews, and Bruce Hale teamed up to mentor a class of 2nd graders at Allen Elementary School, presenting JA’ Our Community’. This program teaches the students about how businesses provide jobs, goods and services to a community, about performing a job to get paid, about government workers and taxes, voting, and how money moves through a community.
All these wonderful Canton Rotarians shared their real-life experiences and perspective with these students to reinforce the messages they were given through the JA curriculum.
Thank you and a free make-up to Ron, Jim, Tom, Bruce, Teena, Amanda, Bob and Bruce for being part of Canton Rotary’s Junior Achievement-In-A-Day project. Secretary Suzette Matthews then welcomed the following guest to the meeting: Dan Braxton (guest of Chad Minor). Suzette then made an announcement that it was President Craig Young's birthday and Rotarian Bill Sparks proceeded to play "Happy Birthday" on the piano, accompanied by singing from all in attendance!
The "Happy Bucks" news was then provided by the following:
*Curt Werren--in honor of his and Stephanie's triplets, who were celebrating their 18th birthday.
*John Werren--in celebration of Bill Sparks standing and playing the piano...AND the 18th birthday of his triplet grandchildren (after all, it is a family affair when you have triplet grandchildren :))...AND to share his excitement that his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Werren, has become a new Rotarian, which continues the long line of Werren family Rotarians.
*Scott Sandrock--celebrating the birth of his new grandson, Owen Sandrock.
*Bob Myers-in celebration of his grandchildren's birthdays.
*Greg Luntz--in celebration of his daughter (who lives in Oklahoma) wearing Ohio State Scarlet & Gray to the Sooners vs Buckeyes game on Saturday (in Oklahoma).
*Craig Young--in celebration of his birthday, Mexican Independence Day, and the pending Canton Rotary Oktoberfest.
*Suzette Matthews--in recognition of Michelle Mullaly and all her hard work on the Oktoberfest event (to be held the next day, Saturday, Sept 17, 2016). You Rock Michelle!
*Brent Rice--in celebration of he and his wife's 21st wedding anniversary.
Rotarian Mark Clendenin took to the podium to remind members it was still not too late to make a contribution to the Louisiana "$50.00 Challenge". You still have until September 23rd to make a donation to help the Louisiana victims who are still dealing with the effects from the recent flood damage. (*Please see story above).
Vice President Michelle Mullaly was pleased to announce she had enough volunteers to cover the "Oktoberfest". She stated if you had purchased a t-shirt it was available for pick-up and to see Lauri/Barb. VP Michelle then announced the day's speaker, Brent Rice, Wooster Rotary Club President, would be speaking on the "Korea RI Convention".
President Craig then concluded the meeting and announced next week's speaker will be Alexandra Coon, Executive Director of the Massillon Museum.
