CHARITABLE FUND DRIVE

Rotary Charitable Fund Highlight – Junior Achievement

Each week I would like to feature different programs that are supported by the Canton Rotary Charitable fund to bring awareness to all the wonderful agencies and groups that this fund helps to support each year. Today, I’d like to feature Junior Achievement.

For many years, Rotary has partnered with Junior Achievement to go into the classrooms of 2nd grade through high school grades throughout Stark County to teach programs that foster work readiness, entrepreneurship skills and financial literacy skills through experiential learning. The Rotary club sends volunteers into the classrooms to teach these JA programs all in one day, hence calling the program 'JA Done-In-A-Day. Not only is this a valuable learning process for the students, but it is a fun and rewarding day for thevolunteers.

I have volunteered to help teach JA classes to 2nd graders on numerous occasions. Despite their never ending energy levels, they really do pay attention to what we are teaching them and are always engaged in participating and have a great time doing it too. I always come away from this day feeling encouraged about our youth and the future of our community.

For several years, Dave Schrade and I would partner up to teach the “JA Our Community Program” to 2nd graders. This specific program teaches information about businesses and the many jobs those businesses offer in a community. Students explore production methods through a simulation game of making donuts for the Sweet O Donut Factory, and they learn about taxes, decision making, and how money flows in an economy.

The attached image is of one of the thank you letters Dave and I received from students in one of the classrooms we taught in 2010. I keep these thank you letters from 6 years ago to remind me how important and valued this program is to the students.

Junior Achievement is just one of the many local programs the Rotary Charitable Fund helps to support. To date, we have received $3,830 which is 19% of our $20,000 goal. I am so grateful to those of you who have already contributed to the Charitable Fund. As President next year, I promise to be a good steward of your donation and make sure that it is used for programs that not only support our community put exemplify the 4-way test of Rotary.

"THANK YOU" LETTER RECEIVED FROM HAMMER & NAILS, INC.
In a letter dated November 9, 2016, the Rotary office received a "Thank You" from Darlene Legart, Executive Director of Hammer & Nails, Inc. Darlene writes:

"Dear Judge Werren and Rotarians,  On behalf of Hammer & Nails and the families we serve, thank you for your wonderful gift of $4,000.00. This gift will allow us to continue to assist struggling Stark County homeowners who need home and property repairs.

Our mission also offers volunteer opportunities for both youth and adults, who come with willing hearts and eager hands to bless our neighbors in need.

Our work for the next 6 weeks includes volunteers from Kent University, Central Catholic High School, First Friends Church, Stark Youth Network, two adult groups and many individuals.  Besides working at homes, they will help us with our year-end mailing.

On December 10 we will be in the Canton City Parks with RunCanton as hundreds of participants come in the evening to run/walk thru the park and enjoy the holiday displays.  At his event we will have volunteer teens from St. Thomas Aquinas, Central Catholic, Canton South and a large number of adults.  They will line the route and serve refreshments.

The volunteers, especially the youth, become more aware of the needs throughout the community.  They also learn valuable life lessons and even home improvement skills.

Thank you again for your faith in our nonprofit organization.  TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF MANY!"
