Maureen ‘Mo’ Ater serves as the Vice President of Marketing and Development for Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, one of the largest non-profits in Northeast Ohio. In her role, she is responsible for the advertising, public relations and fundraising of 22 different retail locations and mission programs which served more than 11,000 people last year alone. She also is the director for The Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill, a collaborative site home to 20 other non-profit organizations.
Mo came ‘home’ to Goodwill after serving as a Board member for more than eight years for the organization. She had previously worked as the General Manager of GateHouse Ohio Media, a regional media group that included The Canton Repository, The Independent, The Times-Reporter, The Suburbanite and About Magazine. Her other roles with GateHouse included General Manager of The Independent and Director of Marketing. Previously in her career, Mo held marketing and leadership positions at Stark County Board of DD and United Way of Greater Stark County.
She is a Board member with the YMCA of Central Stark County, Stark Education Partnership and Stark County District Library Foundation. Mo is the recipient of the Canton Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, 20 Under 40 award for outstanding young professionals and was inducted into the YWCA Stark County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013.
She is a graduate of Ashland University and West Virginia University, with degrees in Journalism and Integrated Marketing Communications.
She and her husband Patrick are both lifetime residents of Stark County and currently live in the Canton area with their three daughters; Audrey (12), Grace (10) and Evelyn (6).
Our annual Massillon-McKinley football luncheon is less than two weeks from today. We have the band, the food, the speakers, and the decorations all lined up.

Annual Canton-Massillon Joint Rotary Luncheon
In celebration of the 132nd annual Massillon-McKinley football rivalry, on Friday, October 22, 2021, 11:30 am to 1 pm at Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 W. Tuscarawas Ave., Canton Rotary will host the Massillon Rotary for our annual Rivalry Meeting.
This year’s guest speakers include Terrell Clifford (McKinley ’82) and Devin Jordan (Massillon ’03). They will be joined by the McKinley band, plus the mayors, coaches, and players from both schools. Please come to cheer on the 'Dogs, and bring your guests and prospective members, too!
Doors open at 11:30 am and the program starts at noon. Lunch catered by Mr. Mike’s is $16 with advance reservation or $20 at the door.

Notes: Parking to the west of the church (main entrance) is reserved for seniors and those with limited mobility. All others should park in the municipal lot to the south of the church, across 2nd Street. Second Street and McKinley are one-way streets. Go east on Tuscarawas, right on McKinley, then right on Second Street SW to park.
I was away on vacation this past week, but was happy to be able to jump in on Zoom to watch the meeting. Our own Jenni George was fantastic. Like some I had some problem with the connection, but was able to finish it watching the recorded version. It occurs to me that many of us would also like to be able to do this as well. I'll be making it a priority this month to create the best way for members to easily do this. Some times you just have to jump in the boat to row in order to figure out what needs done.
Thanks to President Elect Lynn Hamilton for filling in for me while I was gone, as well as all of the Friday Rotarians that volunteer to help make this all work. None of this works as well with out your contributions.
Don't forget that our McKinley-Massillon luncheon is next week 10/22/21. Please go to the Rotary website and prepay before next Monday so that we can provide our caterer with an accurate head count. Vice President Hervey and his committee has done a great job putting this together so let's all make this an opportunity to rally the Canton Rotary troops and show the Massillon Rotary how strong we are. It's a great chance to bring a friend!

* 2004 - Martha Stewart is sentenced to 5 months and a $30,000 fine. She served her prison term at a minimum security facility known as Camp Cupcake!
* 2008 - The national debt clock was created in 1989, showing our country’s debt at 3 trillion dollars. On Oct 8, 2008, the debt went to 10 trillion dollars. However, the clock didn’t have enough digits to show 10 trillion, so they added 2 digits to the clock. (Editor's note: And, right now, if you listen carefully, you can hear that debt clock spinning uncontrollably!)

Rotary Ann
In 1914 San Francisco, Rotarians boarded a special train to attend the yearly convention in Houston. Only one woman was aboard, Ann Brunnier, wife of a Rotarian. When they arrived at the convention, only one other woman was in attendance, Ann Gundaker, also the wife of a Rotarian. As they were introduced, the men began chanting Rotary Ann! They then proceeded to hoist the two petite Anns on men’s shoulders and paraded them around the convention hall.
After that all wives were known as Rotary Ann, until 1987 when women were permitted to join our clubs.
