On April 2nd, 1940 there was held in the Canton Club, a Rotary Club Smoker at 6PM, the purpose of which was to provide an evening of entertainment as well as get acquainted with new members. It was well attended and the price of the dinner was $1.50 per plate. This was a forerunner of our Rotary Information Meetings which went on for many years after that. These “Fireside” meetings thoroughly informed all new members in the purpose and principles of Rotary. Another great old idea that strengthened our club greatly.

In 1941 a check for $1,000 was received by the club for Crippled Children’s work from Mrs. Sidney Erlanger in memory of her husband who died some months earlier. He had done much for Crippled Children and his gift was most gratefully received. Over 70 crippled children attended the annual Christmas party at Ohio Power Company and heard a radio address by Winston Churchill.

Well known pastor, Rev. George Parkinson, of Christ Presbyterian Church, became a member of our club and served with distinction for many years.

The meeting of September 3rd was featured with an address by a local attorney, Fred S. Wilkins who reported that the City of Canton had lost interest in the proposed Airport in Summit County near Greensburg.

“Mares Eat Oats and Does Eat Oats and Little Lambs Eat Ivy” was popular song of the day. And so the third decade of the Rotary Club of Canton draws to a close.
